Travel Tips & Trends: Packing
Packing for a vacation can feel like solving a puzzle—especially when you’re traveling across multiple countries with different climates, cultures, and styles. The key is balance: bringing enough to feel prepared without overpacking. Here’s how to pack smart, stay comfortable, and look effortlessly stylish on your adventure.

Start with the Right Luggage
Choose a lightweight, durable suitcase that meets European airline carry-on standards (usually smaller than U.S. sizes). If you plan to travel by train, remember you’ll be lifting your bag into overhead racks—so keep it manageable.
**Tip:** Use packing cubes to keep outfits organized and make repacking between destinations easier.
Clothing: Mix, Match, and Layer
Europeans favor timeless, well-fitted pieces over fast fashion. Stick to a neutral color palette so everything coordinates. Layers are your friend!
Tops: 4–5 versatile shirts or blouses
Bottoms: 2–3 pairs of pants or skirts
Outerwear: A light jacket (plus a warmer layer for spring or fall trips)
Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes. Unless attending a formal function, keep the dressy shoes and heels at home.
Accessories: Scarves and jewelry to change your look without adding bulk
**Tip:** Pack a foldable rain jacket or small umbrella—European weather can be unpredictable!
Toiletries and Medications
Bring travel-size versions of your essentials, as many brands differ overseas.
* Toothpaste and deodorant
* While prescription medications are not required to stay original containers, it can make getting through airport security easier. If not in the original containers, a copy of your prescription is a good idea.
* Consider a mini first-aid kit with pain relievers, bandages, and motion-sickness tablets
* For carry-ons, liquids must be not exceed 3.4 oz. If you have medications that are more than this, inform the TSA officer at the start of the screening process. You may need to place it in a separate bin for inspection.
**Tip:** Always keep all medications in your carry-on, not in checked luggage, in case your checked bag is lost or delayed

Electronics and Adapters
* Europe uses different plugs and voltage (220V), so you will need to pack a universal adapter and dual-voltage electronics.
* An converter is only necessary if you will be using devices that are not already "dual voltage." You likely do not need a voltage converter for your laptop and phone, as most modern devices are dual-voltage and can handle European power. You will, however, need a plug adapter to ensure your device's prongs fit into European outlets.

* In Europe, hotels are equipped with hair dryers, so unless your hair devices (dryers, curlers, straighteners) are already a "dual-voltage" electronic, leave it at home. Operating the device under the wrong voltage will short out the device, creating a fire hazard.
* Bring a portable power bank for your phone and camera. When on an airplane, these portable chargers must be packed in your carry-on and cannot charge a device while on the aircraft.
Those under 100 watt-hours (Wh) are generally permitted, however even for compliant devices, it is best to confirm your airline's specific policies, as they can vary.

* Download offline maps and translation apps before you go
Documents and Money
Keep these in a secure, easily accessible spot:
* Passport and copies (digital and printed)
* Travel insurance details
* Credit/debit cards with international access
* A small amount of local currency for taxis, markets, or tips
**Tip:** Use a crossbody bag or RFID wallet to protect valuables from pickpockets, especially in busy tourist areas.
Comfort and Extras
Small touches make long travel days easier:
* Reusable water bottle (most cities have safe tap water)
* Travel pillow and eye mask for flights or train rides
* A compact tote for day trips or market shopping
* A mini laundry kit (sink detergent, clothesline) for longer stays
Final Thought
Packing for Europe doesn’t need to be stressful. Think versatility, practicality, and style. With a smart plan, you’ll have everything you need—and room left over for a few souvenirs from your journey.
Ready to go? Make your packing list, check the weather in your destinations, and enjoy every moment of your European adventure—feeling light, prepared, and confident wherever you land.
